Leninguer Carballido, a Mexican politician who reportedly faked his death in 2010, was elected mayor recently of the Oaxaca village of San Agustin Amatengo, the Daily News reports. Now prosecutors are investigating how Carballido managed to make such a high-profile comeback.

According to the Daily News, Carballido forged his death certificate to avoid arrest for his alleged involvement in a 2004 gang rape. Police promptly canceled the warrant for his arrest after the death certificate was issued, but Carballido’s apparent return from the dead is not without its complications. Just this week—shortly after Carballido took office—the certificate re-emerged, spurring an investigation by Mexican officials.

“He fooled the prosecutor’s office, he fooled the office of records, he fooled electoral officials,” a leader of Carballido’s Democratic Revolution Party said.

The party official added, “If all this is true, he cannot take office as mayor.”
According to the Daily News, Carballido might still be arrested in connection with the rape and also charged with election law violations.
